I'm an Early Childhood Teacher and have
taught 3 year olds, 4 year olds, and 5 year olds. I've learned that using
puppets extends the attention span of most students. As educators, we've
learned that the amount of student's attention during a lesson makes
direct impact on what the student learns.
I have used puppets for phonemic awareness lessons, nursery
rhymes, chants, songs, poems, to introduce books, during reading, re-telling a
story, storytelling, to write stories, plays, scripts, in science lessons, to
introduce rules and expected behavior, to resolve conflicts, and much more.
Since puppets are non-judgmental
of a child's reading or language skills, puppets can help improve
the literacy skills by becoming literacy mentor and listen as the child
reads to it.
Oral Language development skills may also improve through storytelling and
dramatic play using puppets.
Puppets can help improve writing skills by using puppets to assist
in creating characters for their stories, plays, or scripts.
Science becomes much more interesting when you use an animal puppet to
introduce the next animal you will be teaching about.
Puppets are a great tool to use when discussing social behaviors.
